It should come off as no surprise that Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. The costumes, the activities, the festivities! And as much as I love the events happening throughout the community, I also love to have the season reflected in my home interior. Each year I’ve been building my decor off of a naturalist/botanical theme; having a nature/plant and thrifted aesthetic year-round doesn’t hurt to make these Halloween interior decor an immersive experience. 😉
Adding to the Jungle and Working With What I’ve Got
Instead of a decor overhaul, I look for ways to enhance the everyday decor. The industrial pipe shelf served as a perfect foundation for adding curiosities like my collection of glass, ceramic, and candle skulls, as well doll parts displayed on the antique Hamilton Printer’s Tray.
In the eating area, the gold ornate frame and mirror gallery, an everyday staple, are a hint that maybe this isn’t all just seasonal decor over here, it’s the vibe.
Although there are plants everywhere, I also added in a seasonal bouquet. It’s faux – modeled after one I was gifted a couple years ago – but I appreciate that it looks “fresh” all season with minimal shedding.
Niche Vignettes
And, although I mostly add seasonal decor to everyday displays, I like to find a place to create a ~*moment*~… Where the scientist makes her discovery. Where the botanist discovers a new species. A vignette that really speaks to the season. I found a vintage microscope at a small thrift shop earlier this year and shrieked with festive thrill knowing this would be a perfect prop for display.
Using Everyday Thrifted Items (and making the most of the project process)
I love a big box store for specific spooky items (hello, giant rubber snake!) but the personality of the room comes together with thrifted items: The candlesticks. The fire place screen. 90% of the books – all thrifted and all things that we use or see year round. The dollhouse is new this season and although I haven’t figured out where it will live, black is universal so I know it will fit in, no problem.
Adding a Single Prop
Whether it be adding a snake to a blanket ladder or a snake to a snake plant, I don’t feel compelled to make every area overflow with seasonal decor. Again, maybe it helps that my everyday maximalist-leaning decor whisper-screams this aesthetic as my current lifestyle.
AND, a beautiful thing about Halloween – or just embracing life – is the imperfect that gets to be showcased. Plants with a little bit of bent leafs? Great! Dust gathering? Let live! Come as you are. It’s always a worthwhile practice to embrace that which we may otherwise find unsightly and unlovable.
Swapping Out and Item or Two
On the gallery wall, I swapped out a couple items (a horn for the rib cage, a globe for the snake/eyeball terrarium). I tuck some of the everyday items in the holiday storage bins to make displaying efficient. In some of the picture frames I also store holiday prints behind day-to-day art. Doing this allows the art to stay in pristine shape and I don’t have to search for it come the seasonal decorating time.
